This book is dedicated to anyone who wishes to enrich their knowledge of drumming by intensifying their study of the double pedal. In the past, this technique was mainly associated with the hard-rock world. Today it has also become an object of experimentation in other styles of music. With Groovology, the young American drummer Jeffrey Jones intends to explain in an essential, but very complete way, the approach to this particular type of study. The content of the book is very well organized. It is divided into three sections: the first section focuses on the study of grooves and fills. The second section includes exercises in which the primary objective is to develop a correct coordination of four limbs. The last section is centered on the study of solos, in which the previously studied grooves and fills are applied. In addition to the method, the book includes a CD, which is a valid play-along for the execution of the pieces. As a matter-of-fact each lesson and exercise, in order to have a good interpretation, needs to be studied with this indispensable CD. This product is addressed exclusively to anyone that already has reading and playing experience. It should not be attempted by beginners. It can be purchased online at www.drumbooks.net . Jeffrey Jones is a young drummer with quite an ample curriculum. He has studied with some important instructors and in some important institutions. He is the director of the Oklahoma chapter of Drummers for Jesus and an endorser for Sonor and SABIAN, and a reputable clinician. This young promise has already published nine pieces of music including two books. Let's look at his two books. Groovology: The Study of Basic Drum Set Grooves is an instructional book that is designed to extend your rhythmic vocabulary from a perspective of patterns, applied exercises, and solos. The information of this specific method does not go towards one concrete style of music, but is applicable to each one of them. The exercises that are contained can seem basic at first, but its careful study can contribute an ample fan of creative possibilities. Jeffrey Jones has so well structured the book and with so clear explanations that your level of understanding and interpretation is increasing progressively as you are advancing. This book is divided into three sections. The first section contains vocabulary and grooves in order to learn to play the drums. The second section contains exercises in order to develop the coordination and power to be called on to greater speed as well as to extend your endurance. The third section contains solos. They incorporate patterns that you have already studied along with new ones with the intention to amuse yourself. Jeffrey recommends that you practice all lessons, exercises, and solos with a metronome. He also recommends to study the book with a qualified instructor, and to follow a steady practice routine. In the past years double bass has become a very popular technique. Day after day we listen to drummers who play double bass patterns on the radio. In Groovology: The Study of Double Bass Drum Grooves, also by Jeffrey Jones, he gives us a new perspective on the technique and suitable application of double bass in grooves, fills, and solos. This book is also divided into three sections. The first section is divided into nine chapters. The purpose of them is to work through an ample variety of basic exercises and patterns with the double bass. Second, it is so that you can develop three important points in the correct execution of the technical side of double bass coordination, resistance, and speed. Finally, to review the two previous sections there is an ample selection of solos. In order to complete the Solos, you need to have an ample understanding and skill of all of the previous grooves and fills. You will also learn various rudiments including single and double paradiddles, quintuplets, sextuplets, and double stroke rolls with your feet. Unlike the basic book, this double bass book is at an advanced level. Patience and hard work will determine your progression of this difficult technique of double bass. Drummers such as Gregg Bissonette and Marco Minnemann guarantee the work of Jeffrey Jones. Rating: 4 Stars |

The title "Groovology" says a lot about the conception of the two books: Main focus
is "Groove by Groove" and each builds up on the groove
before. In addition fills are listed to combine with the grooves. Groovology: The Study of Basic Drum Set Grooves (Level -Beginner) -- The first groove section starts with 8-notes and fills. To permanent 8-notes on the hi-hat, different bass drum and snare combinations are played. Directly in the next section you will play 16-notes and directly after also 16-notes grooves and fills. Then you will loose some 16-notes - you call this permutations-. The last three sections focus to open hi-hat-, triplet-grooves, and quarter note grooves (uptempo) . Followed by exercises: orchestration and displacment plus three soli based on the content of the first sections. On the CD you will find the soli and some groove/fill combinations from each lesson. Groovology: The Study of Double Bass Drum Grooves (Level -Advanced) Like in the first book groove follows groove. But mainly focused on the double bassdrum and the level is more advanced: 16 notes with RL bassdrum figures to a permanent 8 notes hi-hat in the first chapter, 32 notes in the second chapter, than followed by16 notes triplets in the third. In the fourth chapter paradiddles and double paradiddles are combined to 16 and 32 notes bass drum figures. The last four chapters focus on quintuplets, 7/8 grooves, tom grooves and double stroke rolls with your feet. In the second part of the book you have again three exercises and after that three soli. Like in the first book, you will find on the CD the soli and from each section and some groove fill combinations. Jeffrey Jones is a studied drummer and teaches in Oklahoma in three different schools. In addition to his books are differnet snare drum and drum set solos. This is drum learning by grooves. |
